Counting by the components, desktop and laptop computers are very
similar - you'll find the same basic hardware in both, the most difference is in
sizes and design layout.
Everything in laptop should fit in small form. Screen and keyboard are
usually the biggest contributors to the size, after all, the screen size is the
parameter by which you will judge the whole system at first glance.
You'll also notice that keyboard is somehow different from that in
desktop, it uses less keys. Sometimes special keys are not duplicated on both
sides of the layout. There is no separate numeric keypad, so designers usually
embedding them under other keys, so you have to active it (reassign the
keys) before you can start using them, otherwise you can easily use numeric keys
which are in the second row from the top.
In the recent couple of years manufacturers start using the wider
screens with the aspect ratio of 16x9 which is suited for HD-TV. This makes
laptop chassis wider and consequently, the keyboard less crampy.
Still, if you want use the standard (desktop) layout keyboard, in many
cases you'll be able to connect it to the laptop computers via mini-DIN port.
